Board Retreat

After a hard day's work, the participants are still smiling!
The House of Joy at Grailville was the perfect venue for the first CBAS Board Retreat on January 26. Twelve Board members and committee chairs spent the day brainstorming, sharing ideas and offering suggestions for attracting new members, expanding our programs for members and the public, and in general for making CBAS a more active member of Cincinnati's arts community. Many great ideas were generated and now the hard work begins: recruiting volunteers to help implement those plans. Don't miss the Annual Meeting on April 13 to hear details and find out how you can help.

Thanks to Janice for the post and Sara for the photograph. (Sara was behind the camera.)

Another Opportunity at The Carnegie

Meditation (det.), Sara Pearce
You will have an opportunity to hear another CBAS artist soon.  (See post of January 22.) On Saturday, February 2, 1 p.m., Sara Pearce will give a gallery talk about her collages now on exhibition at The Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center, Covington, KY. She will share details about the themes in her work and her process. And she will talk about the papers she used in these collages that focus on 19th century fashion plates and engravings, and the Gibson girls (featured in two works). Sara will also be available to provide information about some of the other artists whose works are in adjoining galleries. Don't miss this informative and art-filled afternoon!
More than meets the eye, Sara Pearce

PULP ART at The Carnegie

Gallery Director Bill Seitz of The Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center (1028 Scott Boulevard, Covington, KY) described the current exhibition he organized as work by "a stellar collection of artists who demonstrate the multi-faceted way paper is used as a medium." Two of the eleven artists, Margaret (Peg) Rhein and Sara Pearce, are CBAS members. Sara's wonderful collages, including antique and vintage papers, can be found in one gallery, while Peg's pulp and textile figures plus handmade papers are located in two nearby spaces.

Your blogger visited The Carnegie last Sunday afternoon to hear Peg talk about her work. A nice crowd of thirty listened as she spoke of what inspired her images in the new figural pieces — the loss of a sister, dear friends, careers of circus performers, migrant workers, a rainbow over New York City after Hurricane Sandy, and Emilie, whose father's story of how she would light up the room touched many hearts. In addition, Peg talked about the hanging installation of 400 postcard-sized examples of paper she has produced in twenty-eight years of hand papermaking. Do try to get to The Carnegie between now and the end of the exhibition on February 15 to see the work of all the artists and especially our CBAS stars. (Thanks to Peg's brother Tom for the photos!)

The Latest from CBAS Study Group

Janice Kagermeier, Study Group Coordinator, taught our group the basics of suminagashi (Japanese marbling technique) at our regular monthly meeting in January. She had enjoyed a workshop at Penland last summer and was anxious to share what she learned. We filled our kitty litter tubs with water, then dropped on the colored inks, dipped in a variety of paper samples, carefully lifted and watched as the beautiful designs appeared. It was instant gratification! Member Peg Rhein took lots of photos of the process. Below is a link to her slide show of 44 images. http://photosbymargaretrhein.shutterfly.com/pictures/99

CBAS SELLS

Thanks to Tiger Lily Press artists for again inviting CBAS to participate in their annual sale. This year the new venue at the Clifton Cultural Arts Center was a wonderful one. The crowds were there and came to shop! Our 2 tables were filled and were most ably staffed with volunteers Linda, Judith, Veronica, Lou, Janice, Susan, Sara and Cecie.
Visitors seemed delighted to learn about us as well as purchase some of the great selection of books and book-related materials. A laptop played a slide show loop of Booksworks 12 and 13 entries to promote the variety of work by our members and friends. Kudos to all our artists (Judith, Sara, Cody, Jo, Lou, Judy, Susan, Mark and Cecie) and volunteers who made the day so successful.

CBAS to be at Tiger Lily Press Print and Calendar Sale, November 3

Tiger Lily Press is a fine art printmaking studio, the only one of its kind in the city, that is open to local artists and the community. The annual print sale will feature original prints for sale from Tiger Lily members and the ever-popular fundraiser calendar. Tiger Lily is also pleased to have work for sale from the talented Cincinnati Book Arts Society artists.

This year's sale will be at a new location: Clifton Cultural Arts Center, 2nd Floor Gallery, 3711 Clifton Avenue. The Autumn Air Arts Fair will also be happening at the same time on the first floor at the Center, so there will be lots to see and some great shopping opportunities. Come support your talented local artists!

CBAS to be at Books by the Banks, October 20

A mother helps her daughter make an "I love books" pop-up at 2011 Books by the Banks

CBAS members will again be introducing Books by the Banks visitors to the joys of a handmade book. Last year it was simple pop-ups, and this year it will be rubber band books. Don't know what a rubber band book is? Then make sure to stop by our table between 10 and 4 on Saturday, October 20, at the Duke Energy Convention Center. We'll help you make one of these simple and useful books in just a few minutes. You can check out the event website at www.booksbythebanks.org.
