Dublin resident Matt Kish’s Moby-Dick in Pictures: One Drawing for Every Page has attracted nationwide attention with articles in among many others the Huffington Post, Atlantic and even a listing on Oprah’s newest Spring Reading List.  Join us on April 14 to learn why!

Matt Kish first read Moby-Dick as a teenager and has since read it nearly a dozen times and has had a self-described obsession with the book ever since.  Though he has had jobs mowing lawns, cooking in a college cafeteria, working in a bookstore, teaching English, washing dishes in a pizza place and now as a public librarian, Kish has always maintained his connection to that novel.  “Each and every reading has revealed more and more to me and hinted tantalizingly at even greater truths and revelations that I have yet to reach.  Friends often question my obsession with the novel...and the best explanation I have been able to come up with is that, to me, Moby-Dick is a book about everything.  God. Love. Hate. Identity. Race. Sex. Humor. Obsession. History. Work. Capitalism.  I could go on and on.  I see every aspect of life reflected in the bizarre mosaic of this book.”

The outcome of this obsession was Kish’s decision to illustrate every page of Moby-Dick, one page per day.  The project would take him 552 consecutive days.  Working in a studio the size of a closet because it was in fact a closet, Kish used ink, acrylics, ballpoint pen, colored pencil, charcoal and marker on found paper to create a beautiful and uniquely powerful meditation on one of the masterpieces of American literature.

In the book’s introduction, Kish says about his art, “It’s important to know that I do not consider myself an artist.  In spite of all the drawing and photography and comics I have worked on over the years, I have no formal artistic education.  However, I have never viewed this as a limitation, and for this project it was actually quite liberating.  Since I have never had to depend on art for an income, I have always been able to make whatever kind of art I want.  The work is for me.”

Don’t miss this chance to hear an engaging and approachable speaker who will take us on a journey through his creation of a remarkable book.
